On August 4th, 2013, we will be hosting an event at Waggin Tails Pet Supplies in Union City, CA. We want to celebrate these incredible dogs, educate the community, and provide resources for those looking to get involved.

At this event we will have demonstrations from local assistance dog training groups; Gaia’s Dog’s, Halo Dog Training, The Hearing Dog Training, an agility demonstration by Training your Human, raffle prizes and games, and pet photos taken by Russell Foote Photography.

International Assistance Dog Week has a TV public service announcement (PSA). It tells people about IADW, gives them the dates for 2013and the website address, and shows them assistance dogs in action.

The 30-second IADW PSA was created by Rick Huff of Some Stuff From Huff and :30 Second Street in Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose time and talents were donated.

The video clips of assistance dogs performing various tasks were contributed by a number of Assistance Dog International member organizations.

Assistance Dog organizations and individuals can embed the video from YouTube into their own websites. Just go to the Free Materials page to get the link. Besides the PSA, there are a number of other free materials on the page to help you promote your own IADW event.

The Honorable Mayor Ashley Swearengin of the City of Fresno, California, has by Proclamation recognized International Assistance Dog Week between August 5-11, 2012.

The proclamation states that assistance dogs include service dogs, guide dogs, hearing alert dogs, alert/seizure response dogs and dogs that respond to medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, epilepsy, panic attack, anxiety attack or post traumatic stress disorder.

The proclamation further states that assistance dogs transform the lives of their human partners with physical and mental disabilities, serving as devoted companions, helpers, aides, best friends and closely family members.

The proclamation then states that International Assistance Dog Week provides an opportunity to raise the awareness of the selfless way all types of assistance dogs assist individuals with mitigating their disability-related limitations.

Canine Partners For Life, which is a non-profit organization is situated out of Cochranville, Pennsylvania, works to increase the independence and quality of life of individuals with disabilities by providing trained assistance dogs and support service.

Canine Partners For Life, is joining forces with assistance dog partners, organizations, and concerned citizens throughout Fresno, California and America to raise awareness of assistance dogs and observe International Assistance Dog Week.

Edward Crane, who submitted this event, wants to recognize and thank his Assistance Dog, a yellow Labrador retriever, named Alepo, who warns him of his seizures and helps him with his balance, every day. Thank you Alepo for being my partner. His Assistance Dog has help restore his life to a level of “normalcy” and he is extremely grateful.

Planet Dog’s popular Yappy Hour will feature a free assistance dog presentation given by Suzan Morris, Founder of DogPowered. 

Come meet working assistance dogs and dogs in training as well as representatives from service dog programs such as Assistance Canine Training Services, NEADS, Canine Assistants and Canine Companions for Independence.  Help Planet Dog celebrate and honor Maine’s assistance dog heroes and the volunteers and trainers who help them on their journey.

The Yappy Hour will feature assistance dog demos and Q&A, provide puppy raiser information as well as information about assistance dog programs and dog etiquette and laws.  Participants are encouraged to bring their four legged friend(s) and enjoy free snacks and treats.

We service dog owners felt the need to get the word out about all the services performed by service dogs who are not guide dogs.  Every one is familiar with a guide dog and the guide dog organization in our area holds events which promote them.  However, too few people appear to know much about our dogs, what exactly they do for those of us with mobility, vision or hearing impairments, or the role of a seizure or psychiatric dog.

Several of us, with our dogs, plan to have an information table of service dog literature and answer questions of those who happen to pass by.

After many attempts, my dog CeCe and I, with the help of a NH State Representative who sponsored it for us, were to finally able get our service dog bill through this year’s legislative session.  Our amended dog licensing law takes effect on Aug. 12th and will give service dog owners the option of obtaining permanent registration for the working life of the dog.  We will be trying to get the word out on that and answering the many questions that go along with a new law.

Unfortunately, should it rain, we will be forced to cancel as it will be an outdoor event.
